SUBURBAN MONASTERY
“The way of Jesus is the way that we practice and come to understand the truth of Jesus, living Jesus in our homes and workplaces, with our friends and family.”
— EUGENE PETERSEN
“The most powerful choices we will make in our lives are not about specific decisions but about patterns of life: the nudges and disciplines that will shape all our other choices.”
— ANDY CROUCH
What IS A SUBURBAN MONASTERY?
We’re called to live out our faith in community and to consider how we can encourage each other. How do we do this? At Embertide, we call it a “Suburban Monastery.”
But don’t let the title intimidate you. We use
the word “monastery” because when you join, you’re committing to develop your faith walk with others; in community. We use the word “suburban” because we will be doing this within the context of our everyday lives instead of being cloistered away like a traditional monastery.
What does a Suburban Monastery look like? Groups of three people will be joined up for one year. The goal of these partnerships is to encourage each other in the daily and weekly habits that help us to go deeper in our faith. Setting up spiritual habits to walk in the way of Jesus, sometimes referred to as a ‘rule of life,’ helps us integrate our faith into our everyday lives. While we have suggestions on habits for our triads, you’re also free to choose cadences and activities that make sense in your life.
